Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.
Grant joined United in 2018 having previously played for Derby County, Burnley, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City, making over 500 appearances in his career.
“After 511 matches, I have decided that this is the right time to move on to the next stage of my career,” he said in a statement.
“There were so many fun moments mixed with the odd challenge, but I’m grateful to every one of them. Realizing my childhood dream of playing for Manchester United was something I thought was beyond reach, so I achieved this success. With pride and passion!”
“Although I have not played many matches in the past four years, I give everything to the group every day on the field and in the dressing room. It was one opportunity to join the biggest club in the world. I can never refuse it and am so grateful for the lessons learned and friends who acquired them.
“The opportunity to challenge, set standards and ultimately learn from some truly exceptional players and staff has been so invaluable.”
The 39-year-old has featured twice for the Red Devils, making his debut against Derby in the 2018/19 League Cup third round at Old Trafford.
