Real Madrid fans have responded to Kylian Mbappe’s renewal at Paris Saint-Germain by calling on the club to bring back Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 37-year-old Portuguese left Real Madrid after nine years with Juventus in the summer ahead of the 2018/19 season. In that time, he won four Golden Balls to add to one solo from his first stint at Manchester United.
He also won two LaLiga Santander titles and four Champions League titles to add to his title from Man United. But most importantly, Ronaldo became the club’s all-time leading scorer by scoring 450 goals in as many matches in that nine-year period.
He achieved this remarkable feat by averaging between 40 and 50 goals in eight of his nine seasons at the club.
Since his exit, the club has been unable to replace him. They finally got to know his replacement in Mbappe and he chased after him aggressively. Fans have even gone so far as to chant Mbappe’s name at the Santiago Bernabeu in their penultimate match of the 2021/22 season, believing his arrival is imminent.
The 23-year-old broke their hearts and signed a huge contract to stay at Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, much to the delight of PSG fans.
#CristianoVuelve hashtag is spreading fast
After expressing their disappointment with the way the entire event had played out, Real Madrid fans immediately began a campaign on social media to persuade the club to bring Ronaldo back into the squad.
Ronaldo has since returned to Manchester United where he started his career, but has been unable to make any significant difference to the club. He has scored 18 goals in 30 Premier League matches so far and 24 goals in 38 games in total this season.
Not only has this been the season with the fewest goals, but this season United have been the poorest team they’ve played in, as well as their poorest season overall.
Ronaldo is set to miss the Champions League this season as United sit sixth in the Premier League table. This will be the first season of his professional career that the competition will miss.
Amid speculation that Ronaldo will leave Madrid in search of Champions League football, Real Madrid fans have taken to the hashtag #CristianoVuelve to get club managers to consider bringing their legendary striker back to the club.
The Mirror reported in January that President Florentino Perez would have considered bringing Ronaldo back if he failed to win Mbappe. Real Madrid fans have chosen to remind Perez of this as they prepare for the new season.
It remains to be seen if the club will make a move for Ronaldo, who is said to be keen to stay at United and work with new manager Eric ten Hag.
