Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool: Reds keeps title hopes alive with win at Villa Park

Liverpool kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a tough 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday night at Villa Park.

Any results other than Jurgen Klopp’s side winning would have seen Manchester City crowned the title before Liverpool fired the next league ball. Their fears were only realized in the first minutes when the home owners took the lead through Douglas Luiz.

Lucas Digne’s pass caused chaos in the penalty area, allowing Douglas Luiz to header into the goal. Alison fended off the efforts, but Louise was on hand to push home and give Villa a surprising lead.

But the Reds took the lead just a few minutes into their lead when defender Virgil van Dijk smashed past Emiliano Martinez, allowing central defender Joel Matip to finish from close range. The 1-1 tie is maintained by the two teams heading to the first half break.

In a match of chances, a pair of free-kicks by Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed the goal frame before Klopp headed to Thiago Alcantara for a spark in the 62nd minute. The effect was almost immediate as the Spaniard got the ball back for Liverpool to break at a fast pace.

Having missed a header in the first half, Sadio Mane did nothing wrong this time, showing his predatory instincts to get the end of Luis Diaz’s ball and put Liverpool ahead.

Villa had plenty of chances to equalise but the rude Danny Ings was prone to many missed chances as the Reds pressured late to equalize on points with City who played a game less.
