Saudi-backed Newcastle United have set their sights on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hogberg.
The Danish midfielder has been at Tottenham Hotspur since 2020 after signing from Southampton, spending four years on his first stint in England.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder made a name for himself in England as a hard-hitting midfielder and attracted the interest of a few other clubs before opting to move to Tottenham in 2020.
He has been a regular fixture for Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and now Antonio Conte at Tottenham and at just 26 years old he still has a lot to offer.
Newcastle have identified these qualities and are looking to add the midfielder to their squad as they look to rebuild their club into a force in England and Europe using their massive investment from new billionaires.
Newcastle showed a serious side in a serious side after a successful relegation battle that kept them struggling for most of the season. Since the turn of the new year, they’ve gone from third to ninth on the table after winning 32 of the 45 points they contended at the time.
It is understood that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has personally asked to lure the midfielder to St James’ Park next season to help his midfield have stronger possession. It is also known that Tottenham coach Conte is looking to change his midfield in the summer and that a move to Hogberg is possible.
The Tottenham boss had previously praised Hojberg for doing a ‘fantastic job’ and the Dane praised the Italian in a recent interview, while not betraying any desire to move elsewhere in the summer.
Hojbjerg was recorded saying of Conte and Tottenham: “Antonio is a special coach, he has a special way of doing things, a very high level of performance. There is always time to adapt, time to understand the sporting side and also the personal side, and everything goes well together.”
“Now it is important to go with the flow and see how far we can go because the team is developing very positively. It creates a platform where we can perform at a really very high level. We are climbing the ladder, so it is difficult to stop and look down, and we have to keep going. Focus on the next challenge ahead.
“This is how I think to work better, not to draw too many conclusions, try to maintain a high level of focus and performance, be consistent in your behavior and enjoy the process because in the end, that’s what makes you better.”
He values Tottenham as a Danish club and could keep them if Conte ends up leaving at the end of the season, following reports that the Italian coach has presented himself as a candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.
Hojbjerg is also a target for Roma because former Tottenham boss Mourinho, who was responsible for signing the 26-year-old in north London, wants to reunite him with him.
Roma failed in a bid to sign the former Southampton midfielder in the summer but they still hope to lure him into the Olympic Stadium.
It remains to be seen how Newcastle will deal with the Dane but it is certain that their offer will be financially profitable enough to turn his head.
